Garcia's ‘Legion' Heads to LBBYR... and Hollywood
Kami Garcia, coauthor of the bestselling YA series Beautiful Creatures, sold the first two books in a new series, called the Legion, to Julie Scheina at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Scheina bought North American rights to Unbreakable and Unbound from Jodi Reamer at Writers House; the series is set to launch in fall 2013. The first book, Unbreakable, is also already in development in Hollywood with producer Mark Morgan (who worked on the Twilight Saga and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) attached. The series follows a girl named Kennedy Waters, who, when her mother dies, finds out she was part of a secret society that guards the world against a demon trying to escape his realm and come to Earth. LBBYR called the series a "frightening and thrilling urban fantasy" full of "suspense, romance, and dark paranormal forces."
Whitman Pen-pals It For Atheneum
Kelly Sonack, at the Andrea Brown Literary Agency, sold Sylvia Whitman's debut YA novel, Milk of Birds, to Namrata Tripathi at Simon & Schuster's Atheneum imprint. Tripathi took world English rights at auction to the work, which follows two teenage girls—one living in Washington, D.C., and the other in Sudan—who are dramatically changed by swapping letters with one another over the course of a year. Whitman, who is a writing specialist at Virginia's Marymount University, based some of the book on a volunteer experience she had with Women for Women International.
HarperTeen Takes Quinn's ‘Piece'
Alexandra Machinist at Janklow & Nesbit closed a two-book deal, at auction, for debut author Kate Karyus Quinn. Erica Sussman at HarperTeen took North American rights to the novel Another Little Piece, in which a girl comes to on an Oklahoma highway in another girl's body with the knowledge that she has murdered the girl whose form she now takes. The main character journeys back to the murdered girl's home in upstate New York as she tries to figure out, among other things, the identities of her other victims.
