This is hard for me to articulate, because it's been percolating in my head for so long... I'm not sure it's going to come out right! I just know I've been training my whole life for this project, this dream. It's as if I had to have the experiences I've had in order to be worthy of getting to this point. So here goes, I'm throwing this out into the universe!

I want to run a non-profit. I want to bring music, Portland's at-risk teens and words together in ways that will have long lasting impact. I want to run an organization that combines free writing and music workshops and teen events. The workshops will run, like, four times a year. The events will meld the inspiration of words and the inspiration of music together to change lives. In my dream, Portland based bands like Floater, Everclear and others will play and Northwest authors such as Stephanie Meyer, Sherman Alexie, and others will give readings between sets. Hey, if you're gonna dream, dream big!

That's my dream and I'm sticking to it. The how is whole nother ballgame. But I'm working on it.

I've seen something like that done here in st catharines and niagara falls and it is very successful. They even charge $10 to get in now LOL

That sounds awesome!! Have you heard about Valencia826 or any of the other 826 groups? http://www.826valencia.org/ They were started by writer Dave Eggers as a way to do sort of what you're talking about... (Not music specifically, but kids and words and all that jazz.) Maybe you can start an 826 in Portland?

Teri - you should check out organizations like Girls Write Now (girlswritenow.org) in NYC and Write Girl (writegirl.org) in LA - your dream sounds pretty similar (though different enough!) from their missions, which are more writing-focused. I'm a Girls Write Now member, so hit me up if you have questions. Best of luck!

What a great dream, Teri. The good thing about something like this is funding is available for programs to help bring the arts to at-risk teens and artists are often compelled to volunteer their time and talents. Good luck-G
