Things to Watch Out for While Editing

Posted on March 9, 2010 at 10:24pm 0 Comments

Hi everyone! I recently finished my third revision on my YA fantasy novel. While editing, I discovered a plethora of things I needed to watch out for when editing, like passive verbs, lengthy descriptions, and repetition.

I wanted to share it with everyone because I know we all struggle when it comes to killing our darlings.

1) UNESSECARY SCENES: Yes, you know what I mean. Those scenes that were so fun to write, and so cute in your mind, but do absolutely nothing to…

Interview with YA Fantasy Author Dia Calhoun

Posted on March 3, 2010 at 6:03pm 0 Comments

I was fortunate enough to get the chance interview Ms. Dia Calhoun, author of young adult fantasy novels like Aria of the Sea, Avielle, and The Phoenix Dance. Her books have been honored with numerous ALA Best Book for Young Adult awards. Despite her busy schedule as a full time writer (she’s also an amazing letter artist!), Ms. Calhoun was kind enough to take time to answer a few questions about how she writes and offer advice for other…

Hi again, Lily. Why don;t you email me your synopsis directly. I have to leave town for a few days and my lap top is down, but I could print it out, read it and see if I can give you some suggestions by next week. Also tell me if this will be a light, humorous piece or a bit more darkly serious. I think that's a key to my understanding of how to be of help.

If that works for you, use this email: cleemckenziebooks AT comcast DOT net.

I really did think your plot was a super quest story. Also see you had a request for a partial. Congrats. Was it this story?

Lily, I'd love to read your interview with LM, but I'm doing one with her in a few weeks and I wouldn't want to conflict. I'm sure it's awesome. ";-)
