Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"This will be a little too young for me in YA, but I like that the stakes are clear and the timeline is tight."

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"Thank you for making the time period so clear.  Though, like Rachel, I'm less clear on where this is set. There are a lot of great themes here, but the "internal war" seems less dramatic against the backdrop of the global war and…"

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"I'd like this more if he were rescuing a girl his own age. That it's a woman was a little jarring to me. And "coven" usually implies witches, so that could use a little clarification as well. But overall, you've got a clear…"

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"I think the world-building is going to be the real selling point here, but we don't get much of it in the pitch. Where does she escape to? What place wants her dead? A few more details could really help this shine."

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"I like the themes here about self-discovery and figuring out what to believe in.  But what are the stakes really? What kind of magic does she have?"

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"This sounds like it has the potential to be quite thrilling--the stakes are high and obvious.  I do feel as though we see a bit of scientists trying to track down someone for something in their DNA, so a few extra super-hooky details here would…"

"Who is our main POV here--Jera or Jera's daughter?  You need to focus on whoever is a teen for the entire book, or else it wouldn't be considered YA. "

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"It's hard to understand why anyone is drawn to a guy who has dark rituals and kidnapping in his past, because it sounds to me as though he's the one doing the rituals and kidnapping.  We need to see exactly what it is that attracts…"

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"This is a bit long, and I'm having a hard time how people communicate through their hearts, which could make this a tricky one to pitch."

"The real stakes here are buried. You'll also want to give a concrete feel of what makes life in 1895 Paris exciting and worth reading about."

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"I'm very confused here--the pitch makes it sound as though she was killed three years ago.  So how is she having dreams?"

""An adventure full of running, dancing, hiding, and romance" doesn't tell me enough *specifically* about this project to make it stand out."

Leah Hultenschmidt replied to Georgia McBride's discussion Pitch-Slam Weekend January 13-15, 2012 with Rachel Dugas, Leah Hultenschmidt and Carlie Webber
"At first I couldn't even tell one was a girl and one was a boy, so I didn't immediately understand the implications of binding themselves in the future.  I feel as though the stakes are super unbalanced--he's fighting dirty…"

"I like the humor here, but it also sounds like a lot going on.  "Undead" immediately makes me think zombie or vampire.  If that's why she's immortal, say so. "

"Careful of some potential pronoun confusion in that second sentence. Who is it giving Hope a chance to get her mom back? I think we need to weave the time angle a little more throughout so the last line doesn't feel like such a veer."
