I don't know, I haven't had much to blog/rant about lately. I'm sure one will pop into my head that's worth writing sooner rather than later.

I was so nervous! And it was to O'Hare Airport, which is a nightmare most of the time. I was in such a lather that I gave myself a migraine. Luckily I had time to get over everything by the next morning (I came down the night before). It was pretty neat to already know the eds and agent. We said hi in the halls and I sat with one at lunch.

Def join SCBWI. It's the best thing you can do for your career.

I went to the Illinois writer's day two weeks ago and volunteered to pick up the NY editors and agent from the airport. I had Michael Stearns from Upstart Crow literary, Nick Eliopolous from RAndom House, Alisha Niehaus from Dial all in my car!
The conference had an ed from Walker and a bunch of top writers. It was a great day.

You HAVE to join SCBWI. It's the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. www.scbwi.org. It's an international organization and it's highly respected within the writing community. The board of advisors include Judy Blume, Walter Dean Myers, Lisa Yee, Jane Yolen, etc. Editors and agents take members of SCBWI very seriously and will often give them priority over others. Each state has their own chapter (some have sub chapters) and they will hold writer's days where editors and agents fly in to give talks and invite submissions. There are two main conferences each year: The New York winter conference (I've been twice) and the LA conference. SCBWI is commited to helping authors and illustrators perfect their craft and get published so they have lots and lots of stuff online and there is a bimonthly mag with industry updates and articles. I think it's $70 a year but it is soooo worth it.

Mine is historical fiction and I'd love to bust my character out of the YA genre a bit more than I have. I felt a bit hemmed in with her, so it would be nice to really launch her out of the box! The follow-up is def crossover because she's in her 20s when I pick her story up again.

I still love writing YA and the story I'm working on now is def YA.

Do you belong to SCBWI? That's a great organization to be part of. I've made some amazing contact with agents and editors through the conferences. Also lots of writer friends, too.
