Day 24 Teaser: When I look back on it, there were so many clues and red flags it’s like I wanted to get caught or something, but between Mama and Daddy’s personal dramas—his determination to become the next Rockefeller, her waxing and waning obsessions with food—it was months before they figured out anything was wrong.

Winter storms rolled in from across the ocean with icy fingers that gripped Seacity Village in its clutches. Streets usually bustling on warm Autumn mornings, were barren and empty—the few brave souls who had no choice, scurried bent double, wool coats wrapped tightly around their coveralls and knit caps pulled low over their ears.
Day 23-2028
I barely recognize Jess. The short brown hair and serious brown eyes of the boy I’d first met last December have all but disappeared. Now, eight months later, his hair is streaked with gray and silver, the skin surrounding his eyes bare deep wrinkles and his once smooth forehead is furrowed.
Shock rocks my soul. What has happened to him? He looks eighty years old.
Day 24-2600
Unlike the Vestive, the air here smelled of leather and sweat. The entire floor was one open room with no windows—or at least the windows had been boarded up and painted black. Obviously, they didn’t want anyone looking out or in. Standing upright in the center of the room, a metal cage gleamed beneath a low, bright spotlight.
Day 25-4783/total 50,328
April arrived all too soon as far as I was concerned. I dreaded being basted. What would I do if I got preggers again and had to go into The Void? I couldn’t kill another boy. I wouldn’t kill another boy. So I was thrilled when, after two weeks, I still hadn’t dreamed of The Void and knew I wasn’t preggers.

Day 26 word count 2,461 (total 78,013)
Teaser: She was losing herself, her emotions, her control, her feelings. She no longer knew who she was, what she was becoming.
And yet the power within her… she knew that if she gave herself over to it completely, nothing, no one, would be able to stop her.
Not even herself.

Because I’d been basted earlier in the month, Matron Eve sent me to the Vestive to be checked. I already knew I wasn’t preggers because I hadn’t dreamed. But I went anyway. But on my way up in the elevator it occurred to me that if the doctor did an exam, would he be able to tell what Josh and I did yesterday? The doors opened, filling the small space with that antiseptic odor I hated. All I could do at this point was hope for the best.
Day 27-1752/total 60,832
For days all I could think about was Josh standing alone in The Void, scared and wondering why he was there. Who was preggers with his seed? I hadn’t even known he’d been milked, but I guess all young men are required, just as we were. So the question became, who was in The Void with him? How could I find out without being too obvious? Then I remembered the vision of Moira and her Clan.
