Comment by Rebecca Fyfe on January 2, 2013 at 3:57am Hi! I'm still trying to work out how to claim my prize. :)
51471 words finished! Grammy's Magic Steamboat
Fairyland and their friends are in danger. A key, music box and a magic steamboat take the boys back in time when Grammy was young...
Daniel says, “Ah here it is… Grammy’s diary is right here.”
A small burgundy old leather book was busy dusting itself off after Daniel opened up the floor board in his closet. It sneezed then laid down on the ground in exhaustion.
Daniel says, “Do you have a time travel invention that will take me back to the fifties?”
The little book sits up and frowns for a minute than smiles as its hundreds of pages rustle and fly open to a section than stop.
Josh looks inside the book in surprise as it grows to a much bigger size. Out pops a draft sketch of a steamboat named “Salty.”
Josh looks at Daniel, “Cool, last year I built a space ship, this year I get to build a steamboat.”
Daniel says, “Not just any boat, a steamboat named “Salty”.
Josh says, “Twenty feet long, stitch type construction with plywood. Where do you propose I find plywood?”
Daniel says, “There’s a lumber mill in Thompson Hill County. I’ll order some wood have it delivered here and tell them its part of the “renovations” for the play house here.”
Josh asks, “Are you renovating the play house?”
Daniel smirks, “Hey the cottage gets a new look so will our tree forts, only much bigger. We have to build a sort of garage to hide the steamboat in.”
Josh says, “We also want to build it near the river, so we’ll have to somehow move the stuff from here to there. That’s going to take a lot of magic.”
Daniel says, “Not if we can get our hands on some magic jelly beans.”
Josh grins, “Giant Damien!”
Daniel says, “Samuel’s planning to visit him tomorrow, let’s tag along.”
Josh says, “Are you going to tell Samuel about this?”
Daniel says, “Are you kidding? He can’t keep a secret. Best for us to build it than let him see the finished project, pick him up and go…”
Josh says, “He’s going to want to take Giant Damien with him.”
Daniel says, “Yes I know. I’ll need some shrinking person magic jelly beans too, which I’m sure you can create for us?”
Josh says, “That’s impossible! The fairies keep the recipe a secret.”
Daniel says, “Then I guess we’ll just have to get the recipe or a copy of it somehow.”
Josh says, “And how do you propose to do that?”
Daniel says, “Fly to fairyland, distract Gracie somehow, get a copy of it and sneak back here.”
Josh groans, “With age, your mischief has become quite dangerous. I think your “magic powers” have gone to your head. You know it’s a crime to steal things, but Fairyland? That’s like a death wish. You can’t do it that way Daniel. I have a better plan.

Comment by Adrianne Russell on December 1, 2012 at 11:12pm Day 18: Josh shrugs and does as he’s told, but with a soft chuckle that makes my cheeks burn. Whatever game I thought I had has completely escaped me.
Day 19: No new words today!
Day 20: I’m tongue-tied and feeling like a complete novice. Channeling Nat’s confidence, like I did before with Cooper, won’t work here. Teasing a guy I’ve known for years is easy. Nothing about Josh is a given. I can’t predict what he’ll say or do and that makes me nervous as hell.
Day 21: “That’s a long story,” Josh says, turning down my street.
“I’ve got time.”
“Maybe someday I’ll tell it. When I know you better.”
“But you’ve seen my ass!” I blurt. Ugggh, really? Pull it together, Fallon. “That must count for something.”
Day 22: No words today but lots of turkey!
Day 23: Turkey coma!
Day 24: “Fine, be mysterious. See if I let you peek again.” Josh parks in the driveway, gets out and opens my door. I put my feet on the running board.
“I guess you better get out more carefully this time.”
He holds out his hand. It’s the second time I’ve held it today, and it feels even better than before. How can I get him to touch the rest of me?

snippet:
When the flame dispersed and the smoke cleared, the short hooded figure was standing in front of Master, shielding him.
Who was this person? Why was the Phoenix flame useless?
“The Beasts would not hurt one of their own.” Tribal speech of a woman. My heart went thud when she slowly raised her head and pushed back her hood.
“Mother. What are you doing here?”

I hit my goal of 30k and really like the story. Thanks for all the help and encouragement from this forum crew.
Snippet:
Jeb sat up quickly. "You aint' gonna tell us we can't stay are you, Smitty?"
"No, no, boys. You can stay."
We all let out a deep long sigh of relief.
"No, what I want to talk to you about is respect."
"Respect?" Asked Abe.
"Yes. Respect. Tell me Abe, what does your family do when they bring a dead person into your Pa's place?"
Big Abe looked puzzled.
"I mean, do you gawk and stare and make comments about the dead person right there in front of the dead person’s people?"
"Heavens no, Mr. Smitty. We'd never do anything rude like that. Pa says we need to treat the dead and their grieving survivors the best we can in their time of sorrow. You know, feel for their situation." Abe beamed with pride at his knowledge of the family business.
"That's right, Abe. Your Pa is a smart man. That's called respect for the dead and I need you boys to show that kind of respect when the Sultana docks here tonight."
Comment by Rebecca Fyfe on November 30, 2012 at 5:10pm NaNoWriMo 2012: Day 30: LAST DAY! 4,051 words written today for a grand total word count of 100,163 words written and the first draft of my novel FINISHED!
Snippet from today's writing:
I dreamed.
I was standing on a giant book, and, as I walked along its pages, my story slowly wrote itself. There weren’t that many pages in the book that had writing on them; most of the book was still blank. My life was still, mostly, unwritten.
To my right was a second book. Jake walked along its pages, but, as I stopped along the pages of my book to look at him, he stopped to look at me. And we stood there, our story still unwritten and so many words still unsaid.
