Have a love of Middle Grade books? Come be inspired while inspiring others!
It's great being a Young Adult writer, isn't it? But some YA writers, like yourselves, choose to explore other arenas of the KidLit world, including Middle Grade. So here, in our fabulous MG Lair, we'll explore what makes those tween years of pre/post puberty infamous and memorable all at the same time. (Ages 8 -12; grades 3 - 6.)
Some of our agents are now taking submissions for Middle Grade. YAY! So keep that in mind. Please visit our First Pages, Pimp My Scene, Query Kick Around, & Synopsis Repair Groups just as you would for any YA manuscript you might have written. Shine those manuscripts up!!

Since revising is my crutch at the moment, I thought what better way than to work through it than to start a conversation about it. So here we go:I'd especially like to hear from other pantsers--we…Continue

Comment by Brigid Gaffikin on February 7, 2013 at 5:56pm Thanks Kelly! Guess I'd been scared to try it -- spent the whole morning rewriting and it looks like 1P is the way to go for now. It makes a lot more sense for the whodunnit aspect of my story, too...
Thanks Sheri! Not even trying to think about the industry right now -- just trying to get out a decent draft in a voice that works ;)

Beverly and Kelly - just posted on FB for you! :) All wait a few days and post for you, Darby.

Got it, Bev!

Sounds like you've got some decisions to make, Brigid. I think most of them are totally up to you, not the industry. Sometimes it's hard to decide what we want to do. LOL I'm going through that right now.
Comment by Brigid Gaffikin on February 6, 2013 at 9:03pm Well, I'm going to let it all hang out here ;) Thanks for prompting us to check in, Sheri! My WIP is a revision of my Nano and it's a vast improvement on what I ended up with in Nov (not that I could have done it *without* Nano). But now I'm stuck. I'd love to hear how others have shaped their stories for an MG audience.
I'm committed to writing an MG story, even though the MC is 13, b/c the story is largely about her coming to terms with who she is. But as I tinker with the plot and fill in all those holes I conveniently ignored in November, I can't stop wondering whether I should drop her age to 11 or 12 and clean up the (probably too complicated) plot, or just dig in and go for an upper MG audience. Plus, do I stick with third person close POV or switch to first person present... Too many problems, all self-inflicted, but would love to hear how others have pushed through early-stage revisions!
