Here is a great way to sale your subsidiary rights - at the rights fairs. Best to go yourself also, but why buy a spot do a coop with IBPA or Foreword

Good Afternoon,

Two ForeWord staffers will be attending the Independent Book
Publishers Association University this weekend in San Francisco. In a
pre-show meeting with them, I was reviewing some of our services,

which immediately prompted comments of disbelief that we still had
space available at the Bologna Book Fair:

"You meet with Disney in Bologna?"

Yes, we meet with one of Disney's reps, a guy responsible for
searching out new characters and ideas to possibly brand. He has a

subscription to ForeWord and for the last 10 years or so he books an
appointment and visits to tell us about the kinds of projects he is
looking for, peruses our titles on display, asks for sample copies of

books that catch his eye. The animated comedy Up was from a book he
discovered at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. My report after the

show will spotlight some of his commentary about the books on display
at the ForeWord booth. If you are not in the magazine with an ad or
covered in a review or editorial, doesn't it feel like $175 is a small
investment to put your character/plot in front of this cultural
influencer? And remember, it's not only a foreign rights deal on books
that is a possibility at Bologna, it could be film or TV, or it could
be licensing for merchandise ages 0-16.

Deadline for submission is March 12, we need your book here by the
14th. Register today online at
http://www.forewordreviews.com/services/trade-shows/bologna/

And feel free to call me if you have additional questions.

Warmly,

Victoria Sutherland

I stopped in at indiebookcollective.com with Carolyn McCray. I had some technical problems, but I managed to pick up some excellent tips. I'd do it again, hoping I'd be able to participate better. Couldn't get my audio to work, so could only hear presentation.

The all important money issue: International authors using Kindle Direct Publishing have to jump through a million hoops just to get paid, and in some instances even when we ARE paid, we can't deposit it.

Please sign the petitionto encourage Amazon to change their payment policy for international authors. And spread the word! We're going to need a LOT of signatures to get this taken seriously.

Thanks everyone,

Sarah

About the Speaker: Mark Coker founded Smashwords in 2008 to change the way books are published, marketed and sold.

Mark is co-author along with his wife, Lesleyann, of Boob Tube, a novel that explores the behind-the-scenes world of daytime television soap operas. It was Mark's experience trying to get Boob Tube published that inspired him to start Smashwords. He believes Smashwords holds the promise to make publishing more enriching for authors, readers and publishers.

In the four years since its launch, Smashwords has grown to become the leading ebook distributor serving indie authors, small presses and literary agents. Over 30,000 authors and publishers from around the world have published books with Smashwords.

In June, 2010, The Wall Street Journal named Mark one of the "Eight Stars of Self-Publishing."

In addition to Mark's work with Smashwords, since 1993 he has owned Dovetail Public Relations, an award-winning Silicon Valley PR firm that specializes in representing technology startups.

Mark is a long time angel investor and advisor to technology and media startups. He currently serves on the advisory board of GetQuik, a provider of restaurant order automation technology and services. Mark previously served on the advisory board for Flat World Knowledge, the leading publisher of open source textbooks.
