I'm looking for one, too.
I offer full-service editing. Visit http://georgiamcbridebooks.wordpress.com for details and testimonials.

Georgia,

Would you say that a full manuscript deconstruct would prepare my manuscript for literary agencies? I'm willing to work back-and-forth on creating a submission ready manuscript, if this service was created for that. I believe you charge $4/page?

Thank you,

Jennifer

I work as a freelance editor, and I know several other. Details on my editing here: www.belletrinsic.com, but if you need other suggestions, let me know what genre/specialty you need help with.

Thank you!

Jennifer--I can't discuss your particular project because I have no idea what it is. But YES. In general the deconstruct is meant to prepare you for submnission if that is your goal. HOWEVER, in some cases, it can reveal major issues which require a massive rewrite OR a complete re-imagining of your story. The deconstruct is in place to examine the core structure of the novel--is it sound? Then I look at the layers--pacing, plot, voice, tension, characterization, sub-plots, authenticity, tone, mythology, etc. It's a lot of work--but well worth it. We dig deep. I am happy to discuss with you in detail and yes the deconstruct is $4/pp through the end of this month. Feel free to email me at georgia at georgiamcbride dot com. I'm happy to provide references. My clients are very happy. You can also see the work I do by visiting the Agent Mailbox here on YALITCHAT.ORG--though it is not as extensive as what I do with my clients. It gets results.

I know this topic hasn't had any activity in a while, but I have a question related to editors so I thought maybe this would be a good place for it.

Does anyone have any experience with inviting or hiring a professional editor to come to an in-person critique group as an occasional guest? Is this something that is done? I belong to a small crit group that meets once a month and in the past an editor/writer belonged to the group and the other members said that perspective was helpful. I was wondering whether we could have a guest come once every couple of months to our typically two hour meeting (or maybe I'm being delusional and it will be really expensive and it will be more a one-time thing).

Has anyone done this or seen this done? Have any idea what is a fair fee for an editor to charge for this? I'm not sure how it will break down either - if we can swing it once every few months, maybe one person is being critted by the editor and the rest of  us are learning by observing the process? - Or do we all submit several pages and have the editor crit all of us each time he or she visits?  Do we have a full meeting where we all offer crits as usual along with the editor, and maybe get helpful hints on our crits as well as our subs? Or allow the editor to have the stage the whole time when he or she visits?

Anyway - open to any thoughts or suggestions you may have.

Thanks!

Melanie

This sounds similar to what I do in my webinars. I'm not sure it would be financially feasible for an editor OR the group to do it in person or that often. Would you consider trying it virtually? What I do with my webinar students is take pages from each and do live crits for everyone in the class to see/read along/follow along. They can ask questions, and try their hand at it as well. It's a great experience. If you'd be interested in it, pleas message me via the contact form on my author website (it's lame and in progress) and let me know. http://georgiamcbride.com/home/contact/  I'm available beginning late October to early November.

Cheers-

Georgia

Actually I've partnered with Cassandra Marshall, literary agent assistant and freelance editor for a crit giveaway on my blog. Hop on over and enter!

The woman doing my book is a low price, but good from what I see. She's got the degree and has done editing in the past. She's with a publishing company, but also freelances. She gave me a really good price considering how long my novel is.

She also does things like helping you create a query letter or first page edits.

I just checked her out. You're right, she does have very reasonable prices. Thanks!
