Hey everyone!

I'm Bronwyn. I just joined YALITCHAT yesterday after seeing a link on a blog (though I can't remember the name now D: ) and it looks awesome !

I've just finished my first YA ms (it's sort of historical, though it's set more in recent history, i.e. the 1980s) and I'm querying that now and I'm working on a ton more projects, including something that I like to call "Southern Fried Gossip Girl" xD

I can't wait to chat with everyone! :D

Hello All--

I discovered YALITCHAT through a couple of authors and agents I was following on twitter and livejournal. I'm still a mere college student, but I've just started my first full length young adult manuscript (I've done a few ya short stories). I've found that college courses are not always very accepting of young adult style stories, for some reason, so I was excited to find a site like this dedicated entirely to the genre and the community of writers.

My current ms is a paranormal romance, but with a literary edge (ala If I Stay). The working title is "These Lies Won't Stay Long".

I'm a college student myself majoring in English and minoring in Professional Writing. I didn't major in creative writing for the exact reasons you posted. I know Hannah Moscowitz, author of Break, once mentioned that a CW professor of hers said she'd never be a good writer, and she had already been published!

Plus, I've talked to several CW students at my university, and they all seem to have this notion that it's all art (I mean, it is, but there's also business), and if they're satisfied with what they've written, then no one else's opinion matters. To a certain extent this is true, but if you want to get published, than the opinion of an editor DOES matter, or somebody who has a lot of crit experience.

That, and the CW program at my uni doesn't seem to teach the business side of writing, so a lot of these students have no clue where to begin. One girl wanted to take her manuscript to the Sandhill's Writing Conference (a rough draft, mind you. She hadn't even finished it), and show it to an agent. I wanted to facepalm myself.

Some of them don't even seem to know lit agents exist! I was talking to a CW buddy of mine, and I started bursting into this talk about the business of writing, and he had no idea what I was talking about. It was rather vexing.
